Launch of Adept Aqua

Introducing Adept Aqua, a groundbreaking startup founded by Dr Bryn Sobott & Allen Haroutonian, poised to revolutionise water health through cutting-edge technology. At its heart, Adept Aqua aims to combat environmental challenges with innovative solutions.

We are initially focused on enhancing aquatic ecosystem health and biodiversity preservation, particularly in the critically important Murray–Darling Basin and rivers such as the Mississippi.

Allen and Bryn bring a wealth of experience and passion to the forefront, driven by a shared commitment to environmental stewardship. They both share an underlying passion for using technology to help the world reach the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

In particular:

  • SDG 6 - Clean Water & Sanitation

  • SDG 13 - Climate Action

  • SDG 14 - Life Below Water

Bryn, who joins as Co-CEO and Chief Scientist, is a physicist passionate about applying science to improve the world. He co-invented the underlying technology, which has already been deployed via a not-for-profit organisation in the treatment of critically ill children in Africa. Growing up on a farm in rural Victoria gave Bryn a deep appreciation of the environment and he believes that context-appropriate innovation is critical to combating climate change.

Allen, who joins as Co-CEO, has grown technology products and services businesses throughout his career. Since 2016, he has been driving scientists, agriculturists, policy makers, and entrepreneurs towards research, development and adoption of novel innovation to protect and regenerate nature.

Adept Aqua's flagship initiative focuses on advancing zero-emissions water oxygenation technology, specifically tailored to elevate dissolved oxygen levels within rivers and waterways. The technology works at the intersection of innovative physics applications and environmental stewardship. This innovative approach not only promises significant improvements in environmental sustainability but also aligns seamlessly with broader conservation objectives aimed at safeguarding Australia’s aquatic biodiversity. There are also adjacent market opportunities within the aquaculture sector.

Allen notes: “At Adept Aqua, we're pioneering solutions that marry technology with environmental stewardship."

Bryn notes: “We are focused on the essential - enhancing aquatic ecosystems to improve biodiversity and reduce the environmental impact of human activity”.

The technology has been prototyped at aquaculture sites in Australia, with learnings being used to further develop the technology and respond to strong initial interest from a number of prospective clients. Aquaculture ($396bn globally, CAGR of 5.8%) provides approx. 50% of global seafood production. Sustainable aquaculture has a key role to play in achieving SDGs around poverty, sustainability, and reduction in hunger.

“We also plan to use grants to trial in river health and wastewater treatment to refine their dual measures of oxygen output and reducing GHG emissions to ensure the product will meet both financial and emission reporting outcomes.”
